ABSTRACT

Advanced student preparation presents several possibilities for active learning within the classroom. Various approaches are possible to motivate students to prepare for class by completing assigned reading or other activities ahead of time. This chapter presents examples that illustrate some tension between reading assignments and class activities. The primary motivation for discussion questions arises from the desire to have students submit something tangible related to the reading. One approach asks students to submit two "discussion questions" on each reading. Sometimes, written material seems clear to the instructor, but not the students. The primary motivation for discussion questions arises from the desire to have students submit something tangible related to the reading. Other approaches can accomplish similar results. The point is that students are encouraged to read technical material, and the class can serve as a safety net for those parts that seem difficult or confusing.
