ABSTRACT

Motivations for writing out solutions to problems might be organized into at least three categories: problem development, promoting learning, and facilitating grading. Development of sample solutions can help guide grading. A possible solution might be organized into parts, with points assigned to various pieces. The distribution of sample solutions to students may convey several messages—sometimes intended and sometimes not. Some positive messages may help promote learning. The development of sample solutions can have several positive motivations, but instructors should review the messages they are sending if/when sample solutions are distributed. With the communication capabilities of the World Wide Web, instructors likely need to be particularly careful in how sample solutions will be distributed. In some cases, posting of case studies and annotated answer commentaries may encourage in-depth study and analysis.
