ABSTRACT

Students can become discouraged if they rarely make progress on many assignments, or if they perceive that a high work load does little to promote meaningful learning. This chapter describes stretch students' abilities and understanding with problems that generally are within the realm of possibility. Challenging students can provide motivation and promote learning in several ways. Solutions to problems in the second book required students to learn basic concepts and skills but also challenged students to increase their knowledge and understanding. Collaborative exercises and team projects often require students to explain their thinking and review ideas with a partner. A jointly-developed solution not only uses ideas but encourages students to state approaches in their own words—challenging students to work through middle- or upper-levels of Bloom's Taxonomy. Conscientious students are rewarded by knowing much of a test—increasing confidence and reducing stress.
