Management is only as effective as the team, and they want talent to be happy, challenged, and successful. Value-added internal audit organizations create competency models linked to company strategic objectives, empowering talent to be successful in the specific environment. Empowering team success may include co-sourcing to meet customer needs or to complement existing talent. Provide the team member with another opportunity to demonstrate trust. A proactive feedback process builds trust in the team member–leadership relationship. Creating high-performing teams means recognizing and awarding achievements. The team member/team leader relationship is an important mentoring opportunity. Providing real-time feedback in the context of career planning focuses the discussion on team member success. Developing trust means regularly checking in with the team leader. The Institute of Internal Auditor’s Code of Ethics states “The integrity of internal auditors establishes trust and thus provides the basis for reliance on their judgment.”.
