Loads carried in a member by bending are effectively transferred through it as compressive and tensile stresses, as illustrated in Fig. 9.1. Due to the low tensile strength of concrete, steel reinforcement must be provided in all structural concrete members subject to such bending stresses to control tensile cracking and, ultimately, to prevent failure.
