ABSTRACT
This chapter looks to the future and asks whether the urban drainage systems we now have are sustainable, and how they might need to change. Sustainable development is defined, and is interpreted in the context of sustainable water management. Aspects of what makes an urban drainage system sustainable are presented together with example approaches that are ‘steps in the right direction’. Guidance is given on how to assess sustainability, and the chapter closes with speculation on urban futures and possible urban water systems.
