ABSTRACT
The earliest attempt at a dynamic theory for nematic liquid crystals was made by Anzelius [3] in 1931, although the first widely accepted dynamic theory was formulated much later by Ericksen [73] in 1961 using balance laws from the classical theory of continuum mechanics based upon a generalisation of the equilibrium theory discussed in Chapter 2.
