Piezoelectric AE sensors are mounted directly on plates, or other structural members, as shown in Fig. 11-1. The probes are usually fixed to the plate with a magnetic hold-down device, as well as common duct tape. Silicone grease is typically used as the couplant when the sensor is clamped to the plate. A hot melt glue also may be used. Probes are left in place for continuous AE applications, but may be removed and replaced for intermittent inspections.
