ABSTRACT

Acoustic emission has found use in a wide variety of industrial inspection applications such as pressure vessels and piping in processing plants, railroad tank cars, FRP highway tankers, welding, bridges, concrete structures, lift truck booms, circuit board verification, oil well blowout preventers, deepwell piping, steam reheat lines, and military applications such as aircraft, submarines and tanks, ladders and cranes. And, there are more. Recognizing the variety in these applications, it is not practical to describe broad details about any one of these. ĩt is important, though, to give a cursory view of a typical inspection setup, and discuss in general terms some other applications, so that an engineer approaching an AE inspection will have some knowledge of the planning requirements, the execution process and the expected results.
