In many inspection situations, not all flaws are accessible at small lift off, and a layer of metal exists between the flaw and the sensor. Typical examples are:
external pitting or erosion in tubes which can only be inspected from the inside
internal pitting and cracking in tubes which can only be inspected from the outer surface
subsurfaces flaws such as laminations or porosity
