ABSTRACT

The harmful effects of radiation on humans has been known for some time with the result that the handling and inspection practices established by current standards are proven to be effective. As in any industrial environment, however, there are accidents with radiographic materials. These are infrequent, principally due to the well entrenched procedures for radiographic inspection. Because of the myriad of factors involved in radiation safety, and the very complete reviews that are available in other sources, the present material will be very short, with the intent to give only a cursory view of the subject. The topics to be covered are the basics of exposure, protection and monitoring. For more detail, the reader is direcicd to Ref. 64. Additionally, all licensed organizations involved in radiographic inspection are required to have a radiation safety officer who also can be consulted for advice.
