ABSTRACT

The concept of a stiffness influence coefficient has been introduced in general terms in Section 4.4, and in this section actual values of the coefficients will be calculated for straight members of constant cross-sectional area (prismatic members). Such members comprise the bulk of those employed in structural engineering. It will be assumed that displacements are small, so that secondary effects, such as the shortening of a beam due to bending, may be ignored, and that axial fOt'ces are much less than the Euler load.
