Situations in which superposition can, or cannot be applied have already been discussed in Chapter 4. This chapter is concerned with the latter, and Fig. 9.1-1 shows a beamcolumn-a member carrying both axial and lateral loads. A 'column' or 'strut' carries axial loads only.
