ABSTRACT
The tracking of miniature floats provides information concerning the magnitude and direction of currents. Photography is a valuable aid, since the paths of a number of floats can be simultaneously recorded; also, an excellent visual picture of the flow pattern results from the spreading of confetti or aluminium dust on the free surface. Immiscible droplets and dye injections are useful means of observing sub-surface currents and flow paths.
