ABSTRACT

Eurocode 6 is the new structural European standard for the design of masonry structures. Eurocode 6 is similar in scope to BS 5628 (Chapter 5), which it will eventually replace. Part 1.1 of Eurocode 6 was finally published in DD (Draft for Development) ENV format in 1996. This is some three to four years after its counterparts for concrete, steel and timber. The delay was partly attributable to problems with the Comité Européen de Normalisation (CEN) mandate and agreement of production timescales during the transition of Eurocode 6 from the Commission of European Community responsibility to CEN responsibility, and partly to financial difficulties. In common with the other structural Eurocodes, there have also been a number of technical difficulties in drafting the document, some of which are still ongoing and will be discussed more fully in section 10.2.
