ABSTRACT
One of the reasons the Poisson distribution often appears in practice is the Poisson process, which is a probabilistic model describing completely random occurrence of events in, for instance, time, plane, or space. According to the model the number of events occurring in a subset of the set considered, for instance, in a time interval or a region in the plane or in the space, is Poisson distributed.
