ABSTRACT

In the previous chapters, we have studied four algebraic constructions on algebras: formation of subalgebras, homomorphic images, quotient algebras and product algebras. Now we begin another approach to the study of algebras, the equational approach. We start by looking at terms and polynomials in this chapter. In the following chapter we will use these concepts to define equations and identities, and connect the algebraic and equational approaches to algebras.
