ABSTRACT
The Gulf Stream has a strong influence on the winter climate of north western Europe because of the very large heat capacity of water. Show that a 2 metre thick layer of the Earth's oceans has a heat capacity that is comparable to that of the whole atmosphere. The specific heat of water is 4.22 x 103 J kg-1K-1.
