ABSTRACT
It has been claimed in the press that a laser pointer aimed directly into the eye can cause permanent damage to the retina. A typical pointer has a continuous power output of about 2mW, the width of the beam close to the pointer is 2mm and the angular divergence of the beam is about 1°.
