ABSTRACT
In many science fiction stories written in the 1950s, the Dan Dare adventures for example, space travel is accomplished in single-stage, rocket-propelled spacecraft which can take off from the ground and travel to some other planetary destination in the solar system without refuelling en route. The object of this tutorial is to understand why we still have not got Dan Dare's technology and why in all probability we never will have.
