ABSTRACT
Throughout history, many technical advances have resulted from an increased knowledge of materials. This is particularly true with the development of semiconductor devices during the last four decades. There is every reason to believe that future developments will be even more dependent on our increased understanding of how materials behave. Well-founded knowledge of materials behavior will become more and more crucial for the design of durable integrated circuits.
