ABSTRACT

The third law of thermodynamics shows that the absolute zero is the natural origin from which to measure entropy. Consequently the concept of entropy is closely bound up with the approach to absolute zero. For this reason we shall first consider how the law can be stated and what it implies and then turn to the problem of producing and measuring low temperatures.
