ABSTRACT
The foundations to a structure can range from simplicity to cases of great complexity. Some will be very shallow, where light loading and good ground come together. At the other end of the scale, heavy loads to be supported in bad ground conditions will need the use of piling to considerable depths to support the loads involved. Foundations can become further complicated by a structure having a deep basement, which also provides lateral support to the surrounding ground and adjacent buildings and streets.
