ABSTRACT

Map-based hyperdocuments, hypermaps, clickable maps are different names for new tools for organising spatial information and documentation using the Internet. Among the possibilities, let us mention navigation and the design of those new kinds of documents for urban planning purposes. Examples will be taken from tourism and road maintenance applications, although an example for land-use planning will be described later in the groupware chapter (Chapter 8). But urban planners generally in their office keep not only information on the territory they have to plan, but also on experiences in different cities all over the world: ‘out-of-my-backyard’ hypermap structuring could be an interesting tool for organising this particular documentation. The Internet as a very important network allows us not only to access simple hyperdocuments, but more importantly bases of hyperdocuments with transactions. Under the name of Intranets, such systems can be now commonly found.
