ABSTRACT
In this chapter we will introduce the idea of a theory, a word which most of us have met in phrases such as "the theory of relativity" in physics, or "the theory of monetarism" in economics. We will explain how formal systems can be used to present certain kinds of theories, and give examples of theory presentations built from the mathematical ideas covered so far in the book.
