ABSTRACT
Steelandcompositesteel-concretestructuresarewidelyusedinmodernbridges,buildings, sportstadia,towersandoffshorestructures.Accordingtotheirintendedfunctions,buildingscanbeclassiŠedintoindustrial,residential,commercialandinstitutionalbuildings. A steelstructureiscomposedofsteelmembersjoinedtogetherbyboltedorweldedconnections,whichmaybeintheformofapin-connectedtrussorarigidframe.Incomparison withreinforcedconcretestructures,steelstructureshavetheadvantagesoflightweight, large-span,highductilityandrapidconstruction.Therapidsteelconstructionattributes tothefactthatsteelmembersandconnectioncomponentscanbeprefabricatedinashop. Asaresult,signiŠcantsavingsinconstructiontimeandcostscanbeachieved.Perhaps, steelportalframesasdepictedinFigure1.1arethemostcommonlyusedsteelstructures inindustrialbuildings.Theyareconstructedbycolumns,roofraftersandbracings,which arejoinedtogetherbyknee,ridgeandcolumnbaseconnections.Thedesignofsteelportal frames is treated in this book.
