ABSTRACT

The triaxial test is widely used, both in industry and research, to investigate the stress-strain behaviour of soils. In this chapter, the triaxial test apparatus and standard testing procedures, and the analysis of triaxial test data, are described. The triaxial test is then used to introduce the more general behaviour of soils, especially saturated clays. At the end of this chapter, issues such as anisotropy, creep and partial saturation, which are not taken into account in simple models of soil behaviour, are addressed.
