ABSTRACT
Although the applications given in the previous section are quite beautiful, the basic theorems on unique factorization might seem somewhat ad hoc, based on the fortuitous appearance of the Euclidean algorithm and the degree function, and are rather cumbersome to state. Actually one can rework the arithmetic theory more intrinsically in terms of ideals, so that many of the main results become easier to state, and in greater generality.
