ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the software through a structured tutorial. It demonstrates some of gnuplot’s graphical and analytical capabilities. The chapter illustrates a number of scientific data visualization techniques that can be applied to environmental data sets. A range of specialist software has been developed to visualize scientific data, including those relating to environmental systems. The chapter investigates how gnuplot can be used to visualize explicit time-series data. It provides analytical functions of gnuplot, which is given as an example of the type of computer software that can be used to visualize a range of environmental data sets. Environmental data sets typically contain very large numbers of values. Some of the techniques that are examined can also be applied to aspatial data sets in which the dimensions are defined by co-located or contemporaneous measurements of three different environmental properties.
