ABSTRACT

THE CASE Sometimes the dice seem to roll just right. Because my husband Spencer was off to a meeting, I had to take the kids to day-care and therefore took the car to work. It was beautiful weather outside and I would have certainly gone by bike to work otherwise. And then I would have had to cycle through the drizzle to the other location in the afternoon. I was nearing the end of my fourth year of the General Surgery rotation. In the morning Greg Wilson, one of the surgeons, had asked me if I could take over for him in the other location of the hospital that afternoon. He emailed me the list of patients to be operated on. Two inguinal hernias, a lipoma, an ingrown toenail and a carpal tunnel. I had heaps of experience in all of these procedures, so I felt comfortable enough to fill in for Greg.
