ABSTRACT

The Last Planner® System (LPS) is a production planning and control method in which planners review work packages prior to releasing them to trade crews to ensure that their preconditions are fulfilled. It is a countermeasure to the unstable nature of traditional construction management in which trade crews are expected to meet predetermined schedules without due consideration for the conditions that govern their work. Stability is achieved in part through direct involvement of the trade crews or subcontractors who actually perform the work in setting short-term work plans. LPS consists of master planning, phase planning, look-ahead scheduling, weekly work planning and monitoring of outcomes using a “per cent plan complete” measure.
