ABSTRACT

As discussed in Chapter 2, natural gas, both conventional and unconventional, largely contains methane. The percentage of methane in different sources of natural gas can, however, vary. For example, while conventional gas contains 90%–95% methane, shale gas contains around 50%–55% of methane, the remaining being carbon dioxide and some volatile hydrocarbons. With the use of appropriate purication treatments (described in Chapter 7), all types of natural gas can, however, use same storage and transportation infrastructure and can be used for heat and power productions as well as for the productions of liquid fuels and fuel additives with the help of reforming processes described in Chapter 6.
