ABSTRACT

The creation of the benefits realization map is started in the program initiation phase to support the business case and is then expanded and applied throughout all of the successive phases. As opposed to technical capabilities, business capabilities focus on the value-added application of a technical capability. The business potential of the deliverables or technical capabilities needs to be identified and is described under the heading of business capability. As such, it ensures that an “honest” business case can be built; avoiding wishful thinking, double counting, and numerical or political manipulation. An outcome is a change in the environment, the business, or the way work is done. Once deliverables or business capabilities are available, they can lead singly or in combination to business outcomes. However, as shown in the business transformation example, that presentation provides a technology-driven view of the solution.
