ABSTRACT
In industrialized countries, corrosion of our ageing infrastructure causes high costs to society (Koch et al. 2002). This can be illustrated by Fig. 1 that compares the direct annual costs arising from infrastructure corrosion in the United States of America to some other issues with large economic impact.
