ABSTRACT

There are many different types of investigations that a private investigator may conduct that will be related to homeland security. Some private investigators specialize in specific types of investigations, and other private investigators generalize and take on many different types of investigations. The type of investigations that are provided need to be based on the private investigator’s experience, education, interests, and clientele. No matter what the investigation, it will be important to the client, but it may also be important to homeland security. Not all types of investigations that the private investigator may conduct for clients will be discussed in this chapter. The investigations that are common to the private investigator that may have homeland security implications will be explored. The private investigator should have a thorough knowledge of research techniques, surveillance techniques, interviewing techniques, private investigative industry-specific equipment, and know how to collect and preserve evidence. It is also imperative that private investigators understand how to take proper and complete notes. All of these areas will be discussed in this chapter.
