ABSTRACT

The operation principle of the single-electron transistor (SET) is to control one electron through a very small quantum dot. The performance of the SET is enhanced with the decreasing scale of the quantum dot. Meanwhile, the property of a single electron permits it to operate at ultra-low power because the power dissipated in the circuit is proportional to the number of participating electrons. Another convenience is that one can use the present mature micro processing technology to fabricate a SET. The scale integration SET has been considered as one of the most suitable candidates of the unit device in future ultra-high density and ultra-low power very large scale integration. The capacitance can be estimated from the conductance characteristics. Conductance oscillations are due to the coulomb blockade (CB) by tunneling barriers with a very small capacitance. The device with an extremely narrow channel shows CB oscillations at room temperature.
