ABSTRACT

Athlone, KG,GCMG,FRS (1874-1957). After education at Eton, he served in the South African War (1899-1900) and also the Great War (1914-18). He subsequently became Governor-General of the Union of South Africa (1923-31), and GovernorGeneral of the Dominion of Canada (1940^46). He was personal ADC to King George VI (1919-52) and to Queen Elizabeth II (1953-57). Athlone was Chancellor of the University of London (1932-55). [See also: B Clifford.
