ABSTRACT

Nurses frequently take a lead role in the management of chronic diseases. Please reread the introduction to Chapter 4 about your need to be qualified for a specialist role.

This chapter is not a complete guide to the management of the many dermatological conditions that are likely to be seen in primary care. Rather, it gives a model of how to gather evidence to demonstrate clinical competence in the management of patients with dermatological conditions. These conditions can be painful and intensely distressing and their psychological effects can be even worse. Skin disease can erode confidence and damage social life and self-esteem. Sleep disruption and severe itching may further lower the quality of a patient’s life.
