ABSTRACT

The growth of organisms on stones relates closely to the nature of the substrates as well as to the characteristic of the surrounding environment. The chapter contains an overview of the complex relationships among organisms, materials, and the environment. It emphasizes issues on bioreceptivity of stones and the factors influencing biological growth. Many characteristics make stones favorable or unfavorable to biological growth affecting their susceptibility to hold organisms.
