ABSTRACT

The chapter focuses on the methods and on the more suitable techniques and products that are useful for the prevention of the development of micro-and macroorganisms that grow on artificial and natural stone objects, including wall paintings. It details the different strategies performed for the prevention of biological growth on indoor and outdoor stone heritage objects. The concept of planned maintenance, which is closely related to preventive conservation, has reached recently growing consideration and several techniques and diagnostic tools have been developed for the detection of possible risks, thus facilitating maintenance and management decisions.
