ABSTRACT

This chapter describes and discusses the analytical techniques-both noninvasive and micro-invasive-suitable to assess the nature of biological growth, its effects on material decay and the efficacy of control methods. A detailed description of all the analytical procedures is far beyond the scope of this book. However, for a better understanding of the results’ validity, this chapter includes a summary of the most useful techniques. It links long established and widely used measurement methods to innovative new technologies, explaining how they help facilitate understanding of the biological growth and its effects on stones.
