ABSTRACT

Hypertension, high blood pressure, is associated with an increased risk for heart attack and stroke, making it an important target for pharmaceutical intervention. Blood pressure is regulated by the renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system (RAAS), which presents several specific points for control. Drug types that have been introduced include vasodilators, diuretics, β-blockers, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB), calcium channel blockers (CCB), renin inhibitors, and aldosterone analogs.
