ABSTRACT

Up to this point in this book, all examples estimating the variance of a statistic have utilized Taylor series linearization (TSL), the SURVEY family of procedures’ default strategy. This chapter is an all-inclusive exploration into the increasingly popular alternative class of variance estimators referred to as “replication techniques” (Rust, 1985; Rust and Rao, 1996). While there are various user-written macros that can be used to conduct these techniques (e.g., Hawkes, 1997; Bienias, 2001; Berglund, 2004), the release of SAS Version 9.2 ushered in new capabilities to greatly simplify the syntax required (Mukhopadhyay et al., 2008).
