ABSTRACT

Sitoindosides are glycowithanolides obtained from Withania somnífera Dunal (Ghosal et al. 1988). A sitoindoside is a withanolide containing a glucose molecule at carbon 27. The sitoindosides IX (withaferin-A-C27 O-P-D-glucoside) and X(6’-O- palmitoyl-withaferin-A-C27 O-P-D-glucoside), represent C-27-glycowithanolides, the sitoindosides VII (3P-Hydroxyergost-5,24-diene 3-O-[6’-O-palmitoyl-P-D- glucopyranoside) (Fig. 30.1) and VIII (Fig. 30.2), acyl-esterylglucosides. The sitoindosides VII, VIII, IX, and X represent the adaptogenic active substances of W. somnífera, in spite of diverse steroidal structures (Bhattacharya et al. 1988; Ghosal et al. 1989).
