ABSTRACT

The worldwide using of herb products and the increasing potential herb-drug interaction issue has raised enthusiasm for discovering the underlying mechanisms. Pharmacogenomics may involve the pharmacokinetic or pharmacodynamic pathways to affect herb-drug interaction. Kampo is a Traditional Japanese Herbal Medicine. The main focus is on Pharmacogenomics of natural products derived from Kampo medicinal plants with special emphasis on cancer treatment. The genotypic experiments have laid valuable insights into the genetic underpinnings of diseases. However, it is being realized that identification of sub-groups within normal controls corresponding to contrasting disease susceptibility could lead to more effective discovery of predictive markers for diseases. Most African people accept herbal medicines as generally safe with no serious adverse effects. However, the overlap between conventional medicine and herbal medicine is a reality among countries facing a transition in health systems. Patients often simultaneously seek treatment from both conventional and traditional health systems for the same condition.
