As a first step, this equation is solved separately for each region. Then, in the second step, by patching the solution together via boundary conditions, we obtain the solution for two neighboring regions. It can be easily shown that the boundary conditions follow from Equation 4.2 for one of the two vector waves. To do so, we can, following [3,6], integrate Equation 4.2 for the first region within a small area in the interface of the two inhomogeneous semi-finite or finite regions, as presented in Figure 5.1.
