ABSTRACT

Engaging physicians requires active listening to understand the perspective of physician partners so that people are in a position to suggest shared outcomes; without understanding their motivations and desires, one cannot create an outcome that aligns with their goals. Shared outcomes are critically important for physician engagement, and they led to tremendous success with regard to the task force. Achieving shared outcomes means establishing a common vision of the problem, the desired outcomes, and the indicators of success. This chapter shows how to establish shared outcomes with physicians by active listening to understand their concerns and needs while delivering potential solutions to address those concerns and needs in a manner that generates a robust collaboration rather than simply surrendering to the demands of the physician or agreeing to disagree. Defining common metrics is a significant challenge, and it is made even more difficult by an idealized vision of outcomes.
