ABSTRACT

At this juncture, we have explored the role that nutrients play in the growth and trophic dynamics of organisms in ecosystems. Chemical reactions must balance both within organisms and in the environment. However, the resulting ratios of nutrients stemming from stoichiometric processes may lead to mismatches between organisms and their environment. Autotrophs often have stoichiometric ratios that match the environment, and these nutrient concentrations have a strong impact on the growth, survival, and food web role of consumers. We will explore the basic processes involved and determine implications for trophic ecology.
