ABSTRACT

Composite materials are engineered materials produced from two or more material components with signicantly varying physical and chemical properties and that remain separate and distinct on a macroscopic scale within the nished product. Manufacturing composite structures are much more complex compared to the manufacturing of metal structures. To make a composite structure, the input raw material, in the form of bers, tapes, or fabrics are laid out in a mold under heat and pressure. The resin as a matrix material ows under heat and pressure and is solidied when the heat is removed. It can be formed into various shapes according to the geometry of the mold. One of the very useful features of composite materials is that the material can be sandwiched with different layers with the bers layered in different directions, which allows the engineers to design the parts to satisfy strength and other mechanical requirements.
