ABSTRACT

In Chapter 15, the conventional metal-cutting and machining technologies were discussed. Abrasive metal removal processes are generally used as post-machining operations to remove burs and sharp edges and even for polishing the surface and improving the aircraft metal component to meet the engineering surface nish requirements. Several standard processes are commonly used for nal nishing. Generally, the metal parts are nished using abrasive materials in the form of sandpaper, emery cloth, disc, stone, wire brush, belts, and more. An abrasive material particle is a small sharp-edged hard element of irregular shape capable of removing a small amount of material from the interacting workpiece surface. This chapter illuminates the fundamentals that draw on the principles of tribology to explain how the abrasive particle interacts on the metal surface during metal-removal process.
